Work, work, work

I don’t understand baby boomers who want to continue working throughout their retirement years when they don’t have to–this comment excludes those like my parents who have been forced to work through retirement due to their meager pensions and social security benefits.

Right now, I work two jobs and freelance for one person on the side as well and pray every day that the husband will have overtime so we can actually have money to do something fun once in a while.  We have barely enough money to keep ourselves afloat and thought maybe if we bought property, it would lower our taxes and what we owe each year to the IRS, and yes, we owe them money every year because I have too many jobs just to keep the roof over our heads and not fall behind on bills.  I can’t wait for retirement, but the problem for me is that there will be NO social security, and I’ll be lucky if I can get a pension payout that won’t be taxed until there are only two pennies to rub together.

Ok, my point is this.  FDR had it right when he set up these systems; we should care for the elderly and those that cannot care for themselves…that is what makes us human…to do anything less equates us with greedy, selfish animals that leave their disabled and distorted young to die in the forest….alone.  RIDICULOUS.  The baby boomers have lived through several wars and their parents before them had to survive the greatest wars, but here we are telling them they cannot have social security or pensions.  I’m all for free markets and capitalism, but does that mean we have to sacrifice our humanity as well?  I think not.

It is time for a change, but I cannot do it on my own.  We need to be conscious voters, hold representatives accountable for their votes, and write and call them like our grandparents did or protest in the streets like out parents did.  We need to stop being so DAMNED apathetic.  It is sickening.

stepping down from my soapbox.
